Det amerikanske musikknettstedet Pitchfork har snekret en del lister med overraskende innhold de siste årene. Deres ferske liste over 80-tallets beste plate (dette ligger mitt hjerte nært) er noe mer i tråd med virkeligheten.
Snurrige valg
Jeg synes riktignok ikke at Prince’s «Purple Rain» er den aller beste, men det er like fullt et greit og relativt forståelig valg til topplassen. Michael Jacksons «Thriller» på andreplass er også levelig, selv om det ikke ville ha vært mitt valg. N.W.A.s «Straight Outta Compton» på tredjeplass? Nå har jeg nylig sett både film og dokumenter om N.W.A og har faktisk fått litt sans for musikken, men den plata er bare ikke 80-tallets tredje beste utgivelse. Pixies er fortjent inne på topp 15 med «Doolittle».
Men alt er ikke vel i paradiset. For her er en del uhyre merkelige valg:
For å fokusere på de 50 beste: Hvorfor er Janet Jackson der? Hennes kommerse dusinvarepop har ingenting på en slik liste å gjøre. Laurie Anderson virker også merkelig. Og Eric B. & Rakim? Slick Rick??
The Replacements, Hüsker Dü og Echo & The Bunnymen er på lista, men burde ha vært høyere opp. Det samme gjelder Paul Simons «Graceland». Beste R.E.M.-plate (Murmur) plasseres på 39. plass, mens «Reckoning» er nummer 90. Det blir for dumt. The Stone Roses’ debutplate gis en 88. plass – det er en fornærmelse.
Store hull
En rekke av mine favoritter fra 80-tallet er rett og slett ikke på lista. Det gjelder blant annet Dream Syndicate, Lone Justice, Green On Red, The Church, Roky Erickson, Los Lobos, Donald Fagen, Camper Van Beethoven, Rain Parade, Steve Earle, Wall of Voodoo, Triffids, Long Ryders og Paul Kelly.
En rekke britiske navn glimrer med sitt fravær, for eksempel Orange Juice, Pogues, Waterboys, Madness, Pink Floyd, The La’s, OMD, House of Love og Monochrome Set.
Og da faller denne lista gjennom så det ryker.
